Tuesday's Toss-up

  • Never, NEVER, N!E!V!E!R! go shopping with your husband on President's Day! If the filled-to-over-flowing-parking-lot doesn't put your husband in a bad mood, the throngs of meandering shoppers will! I forgot how busy of a shopping-day President's Day is.
  • Turning the Entertainment news off for one day--will count on Kristen for any need-to-know Celebrity news. If I hear one more chaotic account of the life and death of Anna Nicole Smith--I may need prescription drugs!
  • 9th grade son is back at school today--returning from a very nice long four day weekend. It will be a long day for him as he has a basketball game tonight at 6:00 p.m.
  • Feeling a little anxious this a.m.; first online class tonight. I will meet with the other online students for Family Systems, Structures and Relationships from 8:00 - 8:45 p.m. Not bad--45 minutes of instruction; 20 hours of research for the paper due next week: "Describe ways that families have changed over the past 100 years." Certainly, one of the first things that comes to mind--indoor plumbing! And then there's transportation: no matter how frustrating yesterday's shopping experience was--at least we didn't have to hook the team of horses and ride into town on a rickety buggy! Then there's Cyberspace! Communication, calendars, and socialization have never been so easy! I think my Professor wants a little something more: Divorce rate: up, Marriage rates: down, cohabitation: up. The definition of marriage--changing; family--changing; roles--changed.
  • What are some of your first thoughts on how the family has changed over the last 100 years?

Families are no longer connected with their extended families like they once were. I'm part Irish--and my family is very clannish. At one time, most all my cousins and I attended the same church. I could tell you who all my great aunts and uncles were and who their kids were. It's a shame we've lost sight of that in today's world. We need a sense of our heritage. We need our families...each one of them-- including the rogues, scholars, black sheep, and jewels.

The shopping sounds like a disaster!! I'm getting to the point where I'd rather order from a catalogue (sp? for some reason that doesn't look right).
Perhaps that's one of the thing different about families 100 years ago. I don't think they did nearly as much shopping!! They pretty well had to grow, sew or build anything they needed!
I'll be interested to hear what you come up with.

I'm with Linda on shopping!

One thing that's really changed is something I indicated in my last post with Kev - very few families eat together in the evening.

Glad you liked today's post!

The closest I came to shopping yesterday was driving past the mall. Too many cars, too many people!

I went back to a Christian college when I was forty with the goal of getting a degree in Christian Counseling, emphasizing Family Systems. I loved it. Even today while watching a movie that involves family dynamics I analyze the whole setup. Probably miss the rest of what's going on in the movie. On line classes are nice, but also hard. I do hope you enjoy them though.

I think one thing would be that fewer families put a focus on God. That's a sad change. When my parents were children, they hardly knew anyone that didn't go to church at least on Sunday, now I probably couldn't even count the number of people I know who have no desire to go to church.

Thanks for visiting me today. What an interesting assignment you've been given!
I think the dynamics of families have changed so much since we've become a much more mobile society. It's really rare to hear of people staying in the same town in which they grew up.

I learned along ago to NEVER take the LOVING HUBBY shopping on special vacation days. He is NO FUN whatsoever.

Hugs to you!

I can't cope with shopping on holidays or the day-after-the-holiday sale. Just too much chaos!

Good luck with your class.

I forgot to comment on your comment about it being harder to get up with kiddoes at this age. Oh, my! And getting everyone to church by 8:15 is a real challenge! It used to be 9:30 when my kids were little, and then it was Sunday School, so being a little late wasn't that huge. But walking into the choir loft late would be a bit embarrassing - or worst yet, not being at the organ on time.

Kev will be publishing his 3rd post today. YAY!
